Rafael ZARZA – GONZÁLEZ

One of Cuba’s most emblematic figures and artists.

Rafael Zarza González was born in 1944 in La Havana, Cuba. As a teenager, he shows interest and develops the techniques of oil / acrylic painting, etching, graphic design and illustration. Between 1959 and 1963, he studies painting and etching at the prestigious San Alejandro Fine Arts School of La Havana. From 1965 until 1996, he was an active member of the no less prestigious Taller Experimental de Gráfica (TG or TEG), Experimental Graphic Workshop, on Havana´s Cathedral Square. In 1982, he was part of the Jury for the Fine Arts Salon UNEAC ’82, at Havana National Fine Arts Museum.

PERSONAL EXHIBITIONS

Within his most relevant One Man shows, it is well worth mentioning, in 1972, ¨Etchings and Drawings¨, Galería Viva México in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1980, he presents ¨Etchings and Posters of Rafael Zarza¨, Arab Cultural Centre, Damascus, Siria. In 1991, he exhibits ¨Posters of Cuban graphic artist Rafael Zarza¨, in Kladno, Slovenia. It is worth mentioning the importance of presenting his graphic and Poster works in Eastern Europe, at a time when Poland and Czechoslovakia were worldwide leading influences in these areas, in particular Cinema Posters. In 1995, he presents ¨Tauropatía / Tauropathy. Zarza. Graphic Work¨, Espuela de Plata Gallery, La Havana. And in 1998, he holds a major show ¨30 Years Are Nothing¨, a review of his graphic work 1967-1998, at the TG, La Havana.

También ha sido partícipe de muchas exposiciones colectivas, entre ellas podemos mencionar en 1961 Exposición Libre Estudiantes de Bellas Artes de La Habana, en La Habana, Cuba. En 1967 fue parte de Intergrafik ’67. Internationale Grafik Ausstellung Altes Museum, en Berlín, Alemania. En 1969 fue incluido en ‘Sixième Biennale de Paris’. Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, París, Francia. En 1984 participó en la Primera Bienal de La Habana, Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, La Habana, Cuba. Y en 1999 fue incluido en La Huella Múltiple 199. Centro de Desarrollo de las Artes Visuales/Centro de Conservación, Restauración y Museología (CENCREM), La Habana, Cuba
In 1984, he had the honour to be invited and participate to La Havana’s ever First Biennale. He was part of ¨La Huella Múltiple 199
Biennale de Paris’. Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, París, Francia. En 1984 participó en la Primera Bienal de La Habana, Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, La Habana, Cuba. Y en 1999 fue incluido en ¨La Huella Múltiple 199¨, Centro de Desarrollo de las Artes Visuales/Centro de Conservación, Restauración y Museología (CENCREM), La Havana.

PRIZES and MENTIONS

Zarza has been granted several important prizes. The most relevant are the Mention in 1968 in the Portinazi Prize in Lithography, Exhibition in La Habana’68, Galería Latinoamericanal, Casa de las Américas, La Havana. In 1982, he held the most prestigious ¨ Premio de Honor Plakat ¨ – Plakat Honour Prize – Plakat’s Second International Competition of Political Posters, with his master piece ¨The Fight for Peace, Security and Collaboration¨, Moscow, 1982. And in 1990, he obtained theMajadahonda 1936 Prize, from the UNEAC, Cuba Writers and Artists Union, La Havana.

COLLECTIONS

Zarza’s Work is part of important Private and Public Collections. To name a few, he is present at the Casa de las Américas of La Havana; New York’ Center for Cuban Studies; Dresden’s Graphic Collection in Gallery of New Masters, Germany; Iraqui Cultural Centre. London, UK; Lahti Poster Museum, Lahti, Finland and of course the Fine Arts Museum of La Havana which hlds a very important and relevant collection of his work, as Zarza is one of Cuba’s most emblematic figure and artist
